Is this really what the text books say or is it just some kind dogma among 'patriotic' Americans? There was also the war in Korea, which still officially hasn't ended (don't quote me on that without a proper source) and the war on terror doesn't seem to be going very well either.

Although I think America can be given the victory of the Cold War (although they won on a stalemate).

Well, the textbooks definitely don't say that they won Vietnam, but the war of 1812... it's still widely celebrated as a victory in the US, because they didn't lose any territory. I don't know what the textbooks say about it, but the public opinion there among the people who actually know what the war of 1812 was is that they won.

And yeah, the Cold War can be given to them. I definitely think the US has kicked arse in quite a few situations.
